I received a Kindle for my 65th birthday and am a very happy camper. I especially enjoy being able to enlarge the print. With regular books I would have to put them down because my eyes would get sore from reading and I would have to rest them for awhile. With the Kindle I no longer have that problem. Another great item is the dictionary at the bottom of the page. Quite often I would come across a word when reading and think I should look it up in the dictionary because I wasn't quite sure of the meaning but of course I wouldn't do it right away and then I would forget what the word was. With the Kindle I can find out immediately.

I still have some regular books to read before I can use the Kindle fully and I am trying to get through them quickly so I can use the Kindle exclusively.

I have downloaded 6 or 7 books and am quite happy with the selection of books. I did read one by Elizabeth Adler that had quite a few typos in it and I found that quite disturbing especially when spell check is available but didn't have a problem with any of the others.

I read by author so am happy to be able to check on whether they have any new books available.

The Kindle is very comfortable to use and sits on the arm of my chair quite nicely. I have been recommending it to all my friends and when I give them demonstrations they are quite impressed. My daughter has a 6" screen but I think I like my 9" screen better.

I love my Kindle. I take it everywhere. The ability to obtain a new book at anytime is fabulous. I take it on the plane when traveling, to an office while waiting for an appointment. I have it on my bedstand so I can pick it up and read at anytime.

The one feature I have always wanted is an optional backlit screen. Too often, the available lighting is too low to be able to comfortably read or presents a glare on the screen. With a backlit screen, there is no need to turn on a light that distracts other or adjust the screen angle to avoid a glare.

I would give up some of the thickness features and battery life to have an option to turn on a backlit screen.

There are three main problems with the DX as I see it. The first one is not specifc to the DX. It applies to all Kindles. I have been very disappointed at the pricing of Kindle books (and the availability of older books). I cannot justify paying a similar price for an electronic download as I do for a physical book. There are two reasons for this. First is that I can sell and/or lend a physical book and recapture some of the cost in dollars or psychic benefit. The second is that between printing and shipping, clearly a physical book costs far more to manufacture. There are just too many Kindle books that cost the same or only 10% less than a physical book. As a result I find myself still going to a public library. Not good for me, not good for Amazon, not good for the publisher and not good for the author. Nobody wins. Whether this issue is caused by publishers or Amazon is irrelevant to me. It still sucks...

As for the DX my main complaint is the weight. If you read with the DX in a vertical position (like in bed), after several minutes you become very conscious of the weight and anything that distracts from reading is bad. The second gripe is the cost. This was a gift to me... i'm happy with the kindle dx. it does take a second to load the next page or previous page. it actually interrupts the flow of reading especially if trying to read out loud, it's almost impossible to transition to the next page without a noticeable pause. i like the automatic page orientation adjust on the dx. i hope that in the future it will support different fonts and different languages. i have put in my religious scriptures (Gurmukhi). i'm glad i was able to drop in a pdf with a different language font and the kindle can read it no prob, however i can't change the font size on the pdf. as for english text there are 6 different font sizes to choose from. very nice. however i think i can only choose between 2 serif fonts, it would be nice to have some more options. my kindle ran out of batteries when i left it alone for a week and a half. someone gave me the tip to turn off the wireless connection when not in use, and i've talked to a friend who said that extends the battery life 3 or 4 times. maybe i haven't figured it out yet, but i want to be able to jump to a certain page, which i don't think i can do. also it would be nice to make multiple bookmarks with notes and quotes, which i don't think i can do, however i'm pretty sure i can make notes that will appear every time i reach that page. i think it would be cool if it had touch screen and color, but maybe that will be in the future. i think it's a pricey piece of equipment, but all in all i'm happy to have so much information at my finger tips in such a sleek device, and i especially like the fact that its as easy on my eyes as a real book because i spend way too much time staring into a back lit LCD screen... because honestly if not for that then i would just get an ipad right?!Get more detail about Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G, 9.7" Display, Graphite, 3G Works Globally – Latest Generation.

I enjoyed my Kindle DX while i had it. Ultimately, I sold it at an auction site and put the money toward an iPad. It didn't seem to make much sense having this one-trick-pony around anymore, especially with the Kindle software being available for iPad.

The eInk display is nice to look at but having to clip on a reading light to view it in bed is annoying. Battery life and build quality are both good.

The one standout thing on this device is the keyboard. It is horrible. The tiny buttons and lack of dedicated number keys put it a step below the standard-sized Kindle.

I had been eying eReaders, particularly the Kindle, for about a year now. Each time I would convince myself that it was too expensive (for books, maintenance, cost up front, etc.), and that I would probably end up not using it. That smell and feel of paper that I was sure I would miss deeply is not as missed, replaced instead with the appreciation of having access to a library of things to read at any given moment without the inconvenience of carrying an over-sized bag.

When it described "downloads in less than a minute" I was very skeptical; I couldn't believe it when I downloaded the works of Dostoevsky (the ENTIRE works) in 45 seconds. No joke. I read a lot of different kinds of stuff: classic literature (world, British, and American), pop fiction, new novels, poetry, and graphic novels/comics. I have found the graphic novels/comics area to be rather sparse in terms of selection but everything else has been a fairly wide selection, with only a few gaps in the catalog available. Furthermore, the prices on the books are so competitive! I find that I can often pick up an eBook for much cheaper than even a used book on Amazon--and I don't have to pay shipping or wait for delivery! I cannot tell you how awesome this is; you really must experience it for yourself.

Basically, I was a skeptic and if I could go back a year I'd tell my past self to go ahead and indulge. It's a great product and I absolutely love it. Let me just say, I only spent about 20 minutes on this device before I placed it back in the box; regardless of the fact that I had 30 days to try it.

As an academic/scientist I read PDF documents every day, so I was hoping this device would give me a) portability of many documents, b) ease of reading and c) overall access. So ...

a) Portability - well, in the images the DX is a sleek device, but once you put on a protective cover, well, it becomes cumbersome (rotating is a nightmare). Think of it as an encyclopaedia volume - not a wafer-thin magazine!

b) Ease of reading - MOST DEFINITELY NOT (for PDFs). Scientific articles are usually in column format, so to make the type large enough to see (if you are lucky) you need to rotate to landscape. This means that you have to page up/page down to access the page, which is now in three parts. So, to read one page here is what you have to do: Rotate DX, Read 1st third, page down to 2nd third, page down to final section; then page up to right column, 1st of three sections, etc. PAIN IN THE BUTT!

c) Overall access - well, mine shipped WITHOUT the 2.5 update that allows you to place documents into title folders, so it was not easy to find what was needed. Another problem, moreover, is that when dumping many .pdf documents onto the device you will NOT be able to manage them at the download point (choosing what folder to dump them in) - you have to do the folder choosing one by one, ugh.

So, in summary, the DX may be good for people who read books that are "on the market," but for PDFs and rare/scanned/non-Kindle'd books - I'd say forget it. Here are a few words about the DX off the top of my head ...

Mobile Wireless will become a liability for all mobile wireless devices, given the uptake of these devices is already forcing mobile providers, with inadequate bandwidth investment, to cap download provision.

The iPad is not your only competitor, Android devices are getting better too, as are other e-paper devices, so providing the software for other platforms is not enough, also I will not accept lock-in to any DRM application, or hosting service, given DRM and hosting servers have been discontinued, at great cost to their users!

I purchased the Kindle DX to strictly read books and reduce the size of my physical book collection. I love the fact that Amazon gives us the choice to delete a book off of the Kindle DX and reload the book on their website if you wish to re-read a book. I have a permanent eye sight problem in turn led to eye surgery, this stopped me from reading as much as I would like to. I have a Kindle DX and an iPad. The Kindle device was a great thing until the iPad came along. In terms of book-reading, they are basically the same, unless you are reading outside and then the Kindle is much better for the e-ink/Backlit discussion that you've seen everywhere else. The iPad is far better in total, though, because it has so many other applications; movies, email, web, etc. They really aren't comparable.

The key, though, is that the Kindle App is way better than the iBook App basically because Amazon's store is so much better. If you carry one device, carry the iPad; it's more versatile. If you use one ebook reader app, use the Kindle App; the experience is the same and the access to books is volumes better (lousy pun intended).

Once I saw the Kindle DX featured on the Amazon homepage, I became hooked! Given all the books I've been wearing out lately, along with the books that have been taking up tons of space in my apartment, I couldn't wait to give the DX a try! I also have a TON of eBooks in PDF format, and once I found out that the newer generation Kindles supported this format I was SOLD.. but like most people with eBooks, you want to be able to capitalise on all the screen-based real estate possible, hence my decision to go with the DX over the smaller Kindle 2. I wasn't fortunate enough however to find any friends who already had the item, and Amazon (at the time) didn't have the Kindle displayed in stores like they do now (at Target stores), so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on both the unit and the leather case/cover (Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX)).

The packaging was very well done on both the unit itself as well as the leather case (which I HIGHLY recommend by the way, fantastically solid construction and the Kindle just clips right in! altho future versions of the case could benefit from a kickstand of sorts).

The Kindle right out of the box displays instructions on how to get started. This concerned me initially because I thought the display may have drained the battery, but I learned later that the display on the screen doesn't use up any power, only operating functions such as turning the page and browsing the Kindle Store do so.. which means the battery life is fantastic unless you leave the device constantly connected to the wireless network.

The device was definitely a little heavier than I was expecting. Nevertheless, the text on the screen is crisp! I love the screensaver feature on the device when you put it to sleep, it displays classic photos of famous writers, etc. The most important aspect with reading from this device is that I forget that I'm using such a device to read at all! I can simply lose myself in whichever body of text I choose to read. Connecting to the network is a jif, and browsing the Kindle Store to download books or publications is extremely simple! Books download very fast, I was very pleased at how painless Amazon made the entire process.

Whenever I finish reading or have to run, I simply put the device to sleep, close the cover, and it slips seamlessly into my satchel. The leather cover is plenty durable so could withstand a reasonable amount of punishment if need be.

Overall, I was VERY happy about the device, but the size and weight were concerns.

MY ONLY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE DEVICE:

- I live in NYC, and I use the train to head to work everyday. Most times its hard to find a seat, which means I'll be standing and will require one hand to secure a pole and therefore will use my 'free' hand to read my book. I tried this using the DX on the train but it proved to be a bit too clumsy. I'm a big guy and have large hands, but it was still a bit awkward to read because of the weight of the device. I was concered about dropping the device a few times.. this took away from the reading experience a bit. There were also times I had to switch 'hand roles', meaning I'd use my right hand to secure a pole and the left hand to use to read the device (I'm a righty).. but then I realized the DX doesn't have a button for NEXT PAGE on the left side like the smaller Kindle 2.. I don't know why they didn't implement this! I have only ever felt comfortable reading from the DX when I'm sitting down and holding it with both hands which sucks!

- The keyboard is a bit awkward to use, even with big hands. You need both hands not only to type, but to secure the device in the event that you're on-the-go or standing up. Also, the DX lacks the dedicated number keys that the smaller Kindle 2 has, which means you'll need to press ALT and whichever key corresponds to whichever number you need every time you need to type a number. Not a terribly big deal, but still a little annoying.

- The price was a little steep at $459, and on top of that I paid $49 for the leather cover and an additional $100 for extended protection because there are times the device seems so fragile!

All in all, I give this item a 4 out of 5 stars. The ONLY reason I'm doing so is because the weight and design of the buttons/keyboard could use some reconsideration, not to mention the price! I mean goodness, for $50 more I could purchase an iPad!

Its for this reason that I decided to return the DX and purchase the smaller, LIGHTER, cheaper and thus more capable Kindle 2 instead (Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation)), which as of yesterday (6/21) has gone down in price from $259 to $189! What a steal! Plus, the smaller unit feels like nothing at all and feels great in my hands. I was initially concerned about the screen size (as I was taking a serious step down from the 9" DX to 6" K2), but my books as well as my PDFs look just fine on this unit.. also, they offer the same type of leather cover!

Overall, the Kindle is a fantastic purchase for anybody looking to get into the 'e-reading' world, and the Amazon System as well as Staff are more than helpful with getting you what you need. With a selection of over 600k books and growing, its hard not to find what you need.. and besides, there are plenty of selections that are completely free from the store.

Now that the Kindle is available at Target stores, I HIGHLY recommend you visit and take a hard look in person at the differences between the two devices so that you can better assess which version is best for you! I should have purchased the smaller Kindle. This one is extremely heavy and overpriced. In addition, the automatic rotate feature is quite annoying. I would like to sometimes lay on the couch and keep the text orientation, but it keeps changing on me.
There are definitely some positives - I like the way the text looks - almost like a real book and not an electronic device. It is also great to be able to change the size of the text.

This product should be dead in about a year. Ipad will probably put Kindle in the history books. Why should I pay $200-$500 for a Kindle that won't let me read ANY of the books I've already bought (I buy aout 2 dozen per year and always have about a dozen that have not been read yet)? If Amazon were smart, when you bought a Kindle, they would allow you to download for FREE any book that your already own that has been "Kindle-ized". Then the purchase would be a no-brainer. But buying something that I can't use until I buy MORE books...no thanks.

The only option for Amazon would be to raise the Kindle-ized book prices to be on-par with the physical book and then just give the Kindle away - money lost on the hardware sale would quickly be gained back in book sales.

Oh well, it was a nice product while it lasted.

I bought the DX primarily for study and work. I wanted to be able to read pdf research articles easily and to highlight and annotate. They certainly do come up well and I will use it a lot for that purpose but I can't highlight or annotate them. It appears that those functions only work on books. I tried sending them to my free kindle address only to find that that function is not available in Australia. I have bought books and read them mostly happily on it but it is a bit large and unwieldy for novel reading purposes. I read a lot of articles for work and study so will use it frequently but am not happy that product description is not clearer and the geographical restrictions. As someone who has had an ebook for sometime and has well over 500 enovels the whole geographical restriction fiasco has been a disaster and to find it permeates the whole ebook environment was incredibly irritating. The Kindle DX is the best invention for readers since paper! My favorite books are now on my bookshelves and when I vacation I just pack my Kindle DX and my ENTIRE library goes on vaca with me. No more wondering what book to take or how many can I pack without going over the weight limit on the plane. My Kindle DX won't take the place of printed books but it will give me more choices of how I want to read. I can even download audio books and have the kindle read them to me. All my magazines, newspapers and 78 books (and counting) now go with me onto a plane and I have no worries about them taking up to much room. It is also nice that you can turn the Kindle in your hands and the print adjusts so you can hold it straight up and it will read in portrait mode or hold it lengthwise and it will read in landscape mode.

Kindle DX is very easy to use, at a touch of a button you can easily turn a page or go back a page, skip to a chapter or page. If you turn the Whispernet off your battery will last longer and you can still download books, even with whispernet off. All you have to do is turn whispernet on when you get back to your Kindle and it will start your downloads. How easy is that? Now with the 2.5 software upgrade I have my books organized by author and also by genre. Some of the options could be better explained, like downloading a PDF book format to my computer and having Amazon convert it to a .AWZ file so it can be used on my Kindle. I had to call the Kindle Support to have them walk me thru doing that. But once explained it was SO easy even for a technologically challenged person like me.

If there is a drawback it is that there are so many books that are not available in electronic format yet. Yet I am sure that when some of the authors realize that E-readers such as the Kindle DX, Nook and others on the market are NOT going to replace real printed books, they may embrace the electronic format. Another drawback is if you want to read and not disturb your partner or another plane passenger you have to purchase a light but there is a company M-Edge that makes a great light and cover to both protect the Kindle store the light and power supply.

This is an amazing product for people who love to read. It does for books what the ipod did for music.

Its a little heavier than I expected, but not too bad--and WAY better than carrying around a bag-full of textbooks. At the time of this review, I find that about a third of my textbooks are available in Kindle format. When they are available, they typically cost less than 1/2 the price offered at the campus bookstore. Classic literature (novels, philosophy, etc) is usually free or ridiculously inexpensive. I expect the DX will pay for itself in about 2 years.

The ability to read pdf files makes it convenient for reading articles from scientific and academic journals, as well as online handouts. However, when viewing pdf's, it displays a page at a time and the text is consequently rendered fairly small (this is not an issue for me, but I could see it being a problem for some users).
