In October of 2009, I decided I wanted an E-Reader.
The convenience of a library in such a small form factor, the savings on books and the ease of shopping for new titles got me interested in the first place, but I move just about every year, and the thought of lugging more books around during each move pushed me over the edge. I was all set to purchase the Kindle until I started hearing rumblings about the iPad.
Many of the early rumors around the iPad described it as a competitor to the Kindle in the E-Reader space. Being a fan of my iPhone, I decided I had better wait to see what Apple had in store.
Fast forward to last month, and the release of the iPad. I got my hands on an iPad, both in the store and with friends that had purchased the device. Spent time with it, and judged it on it's qualities as an E-Reader.
Guess what?
It's not an E-Reader.
I have plenty of other screens to view movies, surf internet on, play games, use the app store through. What I wanted was a screen that gave my eyes a rest, and felt like a book and/or newspaper. With this, the Kindle delivers flawlessly, along with the portability, the savings on titles and the ease of shopping.
The user experience is simple and intuitive, and the screen is an absolute pleasure to read from. I really enjoy the ability to download and purchase books anywhere with cell phone reception, and not having to pay for another data plan as well.
I look forward to picking up my next Kindle in a few generations; I know they are working on getting full color to work on the device. I would certainly subscribe to more of the full color publications (Time, Newsweek, etc.) if full color was available...plus I'd be curious to see how web browsing would look in this as well.
