Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G, 9.7" Display, Graphite, 3G Works Globally – Latest Generation Immediately

Before actually buy my Kindle, I was not sure if I should buy a Kindle or the new fancy iPad. After read a lot of documents, manuals and reviews, I decided to go with the Kindle DX. Now that I have spent more than a month with my Kindle and after read two books on it, I'm pretty sure I had made the right choice. Here are the strong points of Kindle:

1) iPad cannot run more than one application at a time. The kindle's "read for me" feature is a must-have for a frequent reader, either when you are drinking coffee or when you want to do other things in parallel. With the single-tasked iPad, this would never be possible (unless they come up with a software that can do this integrated with the reader. As of now, this doesn't exist).

2) I live in Brazil and my mother language is Portuguese. Although I can speak and understand very well English, I still have many words, mainly in non-technical books, that I don't know the meaning. Integrated dictionary on Kindle is a life savier. Imagine do this on the single-tasked iPad: close Kindle for iPad, open the dictionary, type de message, read the meaning, open again the Kindle for iPad and then put the meaning in the context. With the many contexts a word may have, this would be counterproductive - almost a ridiculous tasks.

3) I am also a book writer (not my first job - I am an IT Manager). I am the author of "Tribo do Mouse - Histórias, Dicas e Truques do Mundo Corporativo" (something like "tricks and tips of corporate world") and I am writing my second book - this time on leadership. I am reading a lot of books and the ability to buy any book at any time it is very good! Even travelling by car to another state I can buy a book with the 3G service available and have the book in a minute and start reading it, making notes on and completing the bibliography I need to use. Yes, I know that iPad is also available with 3G. The advantage here is the free 3G.

4) You can find gold-books for nothing. I love philosophy and I bought a book with many works of Nietzsche for 3 dollars! I also bought a book with many works of Tolstoy for the same price! That is simply amazing for lovers of those kind of books.

5) The e-Ink technology is amazing. I read a lot - my last Saturday I spent 6 hours in a row reading and did not get tired at all! Imagine do this in a LCD or a LED monitor. Forget about it!

Here are the not-so-strong points of Kindle:

1) Yes, magazines and newspapers are not good in Kindle. I subscribed to Zero Hora, a local newspaper here, and it sucks. I am cancelling as soon as the free period ends. It doesn't have pictures and tables - that are really important. Some texts don't make any sense without the picture or table that the text is refering to. I am convinced already that I need a new gadget to read magazines and newspapers (like New York Times) in a "travel light" fashion as Kindle is, but I will not buy an iPad for that. With the proprietary OS, it does not run flash and it does not work with many sites. Keep in mind that if your primary objective is navigate on the web, Kindle is for sure the wrong choice. Anyway, in my personal opinion, iPad is probably not the right one also. You can have a lot of magazines with Zinio - that can run in your PC or laptop (Zinio can also run on iPad). I always read my Harvard Business Review magazine on my laptop with no problem. Of coure, I also want to have the mobility that iPad and Kindle have. But because iPad is mono-task and has a proprietary OS that does not run flash, I will wait for the Eee Pad (from Asus) or any other open Tablet. Meanwhile, I will keep reading my magazines using Zinio on my laptop.

2) The pages on Kindle could turn faster. Anyway, this is not a big deal.

3) Contrast can be improved - at least the background should be more white and not so gray.

All in all, I am pretty happy with my Kindle DX and I am pretty sure it is the right choice for anyone who has the primary objective of reading books and not navigate on the web.Get more detail about Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G, 9.7" Display, Graphite, 3G Works Globally – Latest Generation.
